What size road bike should I get?

I’m about 5’10”, my inseam is about 33 1/2 or so, and my upper body isnt very large. I don’t want to hear go get fit at a lbs, and I don’t want to hear what the Fitting Calculator you googled said. I would like to know from your experience what you would say I would fit. Bike I’m buying is Trek, if you know of Treks sizing being abnormal or something. Thanks

I know Trek’s sizing. There is no 55 cm Trek, unfortunately. Trek road bikes are even numbered. You should test ride any bike before buying and allow the shop to make necessary fit adjustments.

My experience with knowing many riders who own Treks. I recommend start by looking at a 56 cm size.

Test ride a 56 cm with a 90 mm stem. That will probably get you in the ball park. If, with that short stem, you find the reach uncomfortable try a 54 cm with a 90 mm to 100 mm stem. Of course the seat will be higher on the 54 than the 56, but there are a lot of riders who prefer a smaller frame and adjust the reach with the stem. Now, with a 54 Trek will provide 172.5 mm cranks. The 56 comes with 175 mm cranks. Having them change cranks for your comfort will cost you. To find out what length crank will suit you, the seat height needs to be adjusted for your inseam. Place one of the cranks, with your foot clipped in the pedal, in the forward horizontal position. A plumb line from the front of your knee should intersect the ball of your foot at the pedal axle. The shop will probably have the plumb line. They should put the bike in a trainer to fit you. It is a service that you don’t have to pay for when you purchase the bike from Trek. Be patient when you buy the bike and help them get it right for you.

Fit is always stated here as important because: An ill fitting bike (road bike especially because of riding position) can cause pain and even repetitive motion injury.
