Bike Generator Headlight
bike generator wire size.?
I want to connect my bike genterator to my headlight but the only wire i have at hand is wire left over from my garage door opener, I believe its signal wire only one strand. would that work or do i need to make a trip to the hardware store?
Most dynamos/generators push out 3 Watts at 6 volts [1]. That is therefore 0.5 Amp.
If you can measure the wire you have, compare it to the Wikipedia AWG table [2]. Unfortunately, the table doesn’t offer ampacities for the smaller wires which might match what you have.
My own dynamo system is wired with the Schmidt-specification coaxial cable, which I believe has a conductor area of 0.5 mm^2, which equates to about 20 AWG according to the Wikipedia table.
The Schmidt cable is stranded, and doubtless has some over-capacity built-in. If your wire is anything close to 20 AWG then it’s probably worth a try.
