Kurt Kinetic Road Machine Review
It’s that time of year when cyclists everywhere turn to alternatives to outdoor riding as the weather gets extremely cold. When we were searching for information on bike trainers in the past, it was difficult to find product reviews from someone who actually had ridden that trainer rather than just trying to pimp them for sale. We (my wife and I) both own a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine bike trainer so you know that what I write is from first hand experience.
If you are considering purchasing a new bike trainer for this winter riding season then check out our opinion of the Kurt Kinetic road machine. We think it’s a trainer that you should give some consideration to buying.
Bike Trainer Setup
Some bike trainers are a bit of a bear in order to get your bike mounted and up and running but the Kurt Kinetic makes it easy. You load the bike in like normal and then a nifty little locking slide lever gets tension on the wheel quickly so that you can then tighten it in. Bring the tension up against the rear wheel, tighten down the side locks and you are good to go.
Very easy to get up and running although if I were to change anything, some trainers have a neat little foot operated tensioner to bring tension against the rear wheel. It is simple and works great. The kurt kinetic setup requires you to twist a knob a number of times and while it is easy, it just isn’t as nice as the foot setup. This is just about the only thing I have to complain about regarding this trainer so you know that it must be good.
I’d give the Kurt Kinetic a B+ on setup. It isn’t bad but it could be better.
Bike Trainer Operation
Once you have your bike loaded in it’s time to give it a whirl. The Kurt Kinetic really shines once you start pedalling. The first thing you will notice is that this is a QUIET bike trainer! It’s not whisper quiet or anything but compared to most other trainers that I have used, this one is GREAT. You might not think this is a big deal unless you’ve ridden a loud trainer but trust me, the quieter the better.
The noise level is especially important if you live in a condo or apartment because a noisy bike trainer can really tick off your neighbors. So I’d give the Kurt Kinetic an A+ on noise level.
Once you start pedalling, you will quickly find that not only is the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine a quiet bike trainer but it is also a very smooth bike trainer that will give you constant feedback through your legs. The resistance has been tuned with a powermeter to match real road riding, which means that faster you pedal the more resistance you get from the bike trainer and then when you let off the pedal, this trainer offers a nice long coast down.
It rides nice and smooth, gives as tough of a workout as you choose to take and is very quiet and smooth just like a great fluid trainer should be. I give the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine and A+ on operation. It is one of the best bike trainers that I have ever ridden.
Bike Trainer Design
The last thing that I am going to discuss is something you cannot see and that is the internal design of the Kurt Kinetic Road machine. It’s a fluid trainer and if you google fluid trainers you will find a number of complaints that they can leak. Most will say they provide an excellent ride, if not the BEST ride of any trainers out there but fluid trainers as a group are known to leak occasionally.
This will not happen with the Kurt Kinetic trainer. It’s designed differently than other fluid trainers such that there is no shaft that penetrates through into fluid. Most fluid trainers spin an impeller in a silicone oil and this impeller is mounted on a shaft that has to come into the fluid chamber through a seal. Once exposed to high heat, this seal can fail and leak fluid, which means your trainer has to go in for repair. Not good.
The Kurt Kinetic uses two magnetic couplers that lock together through a glass casing to drive the impeller. No shaft penetrates into the sealed chamber and therefore there is no chance of leakage. This is simply a design that works great and gives you peace of mind that you won’t have any fluid leaks to deal with. I am sure Kurt has a great warranty department but who wants to find out.
Summary
So in summary, if you are looking for a bike trainer to purchase then you won’t go wrong with a Kurt Kinetic bike trainer. I can tell you from experience that they are quiet, work great and the design is light years ahead of other bike trainers. It isn’t the cheapest trainer on the market but it is the best bang for the buck in my opinion.
I HATE buying something only to find that it doesn’t work as well as I thought or had hoped. I will usually end up selling it on ebay and taking a loss and then going and buying the piece that I wanted to buy in the first place.
