Bike Quick Release Bolt

what size bike wheel is equivalent to ETRTO 559 x 19, and can you swap a bolt on axle for a quick release?

I need to replace the rear wheel on a 20 year old bicycle and the only marking on it is a sticker that says ETRTO 559 x 19. What size wheel is equivalent to that. Also, the old wheel has a quick release axle; could I get a wheel that is bolt on and then just swap the axles??

I do know that I need a wheel for a freewheel gearset and rim brakes, and 36 spokes. But the size and axle configuration are confusing me. I do know the 559 is supposed to be equivalent to 26″ wheels, but looking at 26″ wheels there are different sizes of them (1.5, 1.75, 2.125, etc) and I don’t know which I need

It sounds as if you are needing a thin, but quite regular, 26″ ‘mountain bike’ rear wheel. Probably something that will accept a 559 x 40 tyre. Because you are wanting to use a freewheel, I would guess that the bike is a budget type.

You shouldn’t have any trouble with axles. You will need a hollow axle that is wide enough to fill the gap between the frame plus enough to fit into the frame slots (dropouts) so that the skewer will pull the axle tight.

If you are in the British isles, these wheels are readily available either with bolt on axles or with quick release ones. You will also need a skewer.
