Rules of the road for cycling in Michigan?
I just started biking for exercise in general. I've been riding in my neighborhood (dead small end, with a lot of cultures, the bags, takes about 10 minutes to go all the way around). I'm getting a little more comfortable and I'm thinking to venture on the road. What are the driving rules for cycling? I know it's supposed to go with the flow of traffic (walking on the right side of the road), but what are the rules beyond that? What if there is a sidewalk and a road are still supposed to be mounted on the side of the road? I mostly just to be on a busy road to get from my area of the subdivision of areas other subdivision. This makes me a bit nervous (about ago 15 my brother was hit by a car while driving with the flow of traffic, which was fine, but you can see where I would be nervous). So only I make sure I'm doing everything possible to stay safe. Thanks for your help!
When you are riding your bicycle on the street, you must follow all traffic laws (with stop signs or red lights, signaling your turn, etc. ..) Furthermore, should always ride with traffic flow. The reason is that if you are driving against traffic to 20 miles per hour, and the car is moving at 40 kilometers per hour, which is the equivalent of a collision of 60 miles per hour. Now, if you're riding with the flow of traffic at 20 miles per hour and hit a car doing 40 mph, is the equivalent of a 20 mph collision – much less damage! Also, make sure you are wearing a helmet. I personally prefer to ride on sidewalks, if available, but there is no rule prohibited from riding on the street if no sidewalk.
