Bmx Bike Price Guide

What kind of bike should I get for all around travel and commuting?
I’m looking to buy a new bike. However I’m not a competitive biker or bmx rider. I just want a bike that I can travel on. It needs to be sturdy because I want it for actual travel and commuting to school and work not just rides in the park. It would also be nice if it was light but I’m willing to sacrifice weight for strength because I want something that will last a while. Also I don’t want any fancy ten speed or anything. Single speed is fine by me and actually preferred. However a comfortable seat and riding position would be nice. I’ve seen more professional bikes with the forward handle bars and those don’t look comfortable to ride at all. If I’m wrong feel free to correct me though. Now the kicker is I’d like this to be as cheap as possible but taking into account repair and maintenance costs in that price. I’m looking for a rugged, cheap, yet tough bike to get me around is the bottom line. Hope someone can guide me in this purchase.
The drop bar road bicycles are more comfortable on long rides (over 10 miles) as they offer more hand positions than the flat handlebars and offer a more aerodynamic position for faster rides. However, the flat bars offer better access to the brakes and allow a more heads up posture, which is better in traffic. If there are few hills, a singlespeed bike is fine, but get one with brakes and a freewheel (not the track bike type without brakes). You can get a bike with gears inside the hub for low maintenance (Nexus 7-speed by Shimano) if there are hills.
