Car insurance while Deployed?
Do you have to maintain insurance while deployed?
My husband is deployed so I took off our insurance on his Motorcycle and stored it in our shed.
I just got a letter from the NC DOT saying why do you have no insurance on the bike…Geico told us you took the insurance off…blah blah, 50 dollar fee…fix it.
WTF? How is he gonna drive it from Afghanistan? I looked online and they said some carriers will suspend insurance while deployed – obviously Geico aint one of them – so who does?

BTW, the lien holder is USAA…maybe they have a deployed vehicle insurance program..
While some carriers do have a means of suspending policies on vehicles that won’t be operated while deployed, most states will require you to surrender the tags on the vehicle if the liability coverage is not in force. NC is one such state, and their law has enough teeth in it that they may revoke the vehicle registration for 1 year for not maintaining liability coverage.
There’s a HUGE difference between suspending coverage and canceling it altogether! When the coverage is suspended you must certify that the vehicle will not be operated (or often even parked) on any public road or access way. Collision and comprehensive coverage may still be required by the lien holder regardless of the suspension of the liability coverage though. And again, some states (NC and PA for sure) will require that you surrender the vehicle tags during the suspension period.
You need to reinstate the coverage ASAP! Then see if GEICO (or USAA) can suspend the liability coverage while he’s deployed and check with the NC DOT to see if you need to surrender the tags during the suspension period.
