Recommended gear for Mountain Bike riding?
What sort of clothing do you recommend wearing for mountain biking, for both the warmer months and the cooler months too? Do you use clip in shoes or normal running shoes?
First and foremost, you need a good helmet. I’d recommend, at a minimum, gloves and helmet as far a safety gear.
As for clothing. Get a good pair of mountain bike shorts from Fox or Royal or TLD or Oakley,etc.. any of the big companies. It seems frivolous if you dont ride but if you do spend a lot of time in the saddle, you backside will thank you for wearing a chamois. The outer fabric is usually more wear resistant and tear resistant than regular shorts too so they wont come apart the first time you go down. In the summer, you can just wear a pair of compression shorts underneath. In the winter you can get a pair of compressive cold weather pants to wear under your shorts or, if you ride terrain that justifies it, just pedal with your knee/shin guards on. Since you’re pedaling, your legs wont get too cold in either case.
Up top, a t-shirt or jersey is fine in the summer. In the winter, I usually just wear a compressive base layer under the t-shirt or jersey on most days. If its really cold, or if its wet, I actually wear a Burton Pitto snowboarding shell but any good technical shell will work. The important thing is that its a good breathable, waterproof shell. It’s really only there to keep you dry and hold in some of your own heat.
Remember, when you’re riding you’ll be exerting plenty of energy and creating plenty of our own heat so you dont want to layer up too much. You should be a bit chilly heading out, otherwise, you’ll wind up too warm.
I’ve tried clipless pedals and shoes a few times just because its what you always see on old school riders and xc guys and racers, etc… Honestly, I absolutely hate them. They really provide some huge benefits in terms of maximizing your pedal stroke but, for the terrain I ride, I need to be able to bail away from my bike and pick a safe spot to land… with clipless pedals, this is impossible. Unless you already know that you like clipless pedals, I wouldnt recommend them… stick to flat pedals.
If you want the closest performance I’ve ever been able to find short of clipless pedals… get a pair of FiveTen shoes with the stealth rubber soles and any good pair of thin, studded flat pedals like the Kona Wah Wah’s or Atomlab Pimplites or eThirteen Sotocattos, etc… You will not slip around on your pedals but you still have the ability to “safely” bail out when things go bad.
