What is wrong with my knee?

About a month ago, I was knocked over by a speeding 250 cc motorbike. I was hit the outside of my left leg, and ever since i have been in a lot of pain. My knee is very swollen and tender, very numb at times, and I can’t straighten it all the way. My doctor has referred me for an MRI (I had xrays done, no broken bones) as he thinks that it is a MCL tear. It hurts a lot to walk on it and I have a knee brace and crutches. What do you think it is?Is an MRI necessary?

Definitely get the MRI, else they can’t diagnose and treat you properly. Obviously you don’t want to be in pain, so do it. I had something similar happen to me and it turns out I had a subluxated kneecap. It’s hell, really. I wish I could give you advice, but you want to follow the instructions of your doctor. Don’t do anything besides stay off your knee unless he tells you otherwise, because you can screw up your knee if you don’t. Trust me, I know. It’s been nearly a year since I fell and my knee still isn’t 100% (and probably never will be again).
