What is a good road cycling shoe that you do not have to clip into?

I am looking for a cycling shoe that do not clip to the pedals, but are good for toe clips with straps. First, I need to know the correct terminology for the parts I am describing and then I want to know a varied product range. I was on Performance bikes web page and it got kind of confusing. I know I can’t use the ones that are for mountain biking. As of now I prefer the straps. Maybe someone could tell me why a shoe that clips to the pedals might be better?

I’ve found that you can use any athletic shoe on platform (i.e., regular) pedals with toe clips and straps. The stiffer the sole, the better. The compromise is between efficient cycling (more stiff) and ease in walking (less stiff).

Not trying to add to the confusion, the system where your shoe clips to the pedals is called clipless pedals. That’s because you are attached without toe clips. This system is much more efficient because you can apply power throughout the entire pedal revolution, not just on the downstroke. You can pull up as well as push down.
