Ninja 250 Parts Bike

ninja 250 parts bike
What would be a good beginner street bike?

I am currently driving a car that gets 24mpg and was looking into maybe getting a bike for the summers to save gas money. I’m 5’11 – 6’0 foot and weight about 150 pounds and possibly still growing (I’m 17).

What kind of bike should I get? I don’t want one where you’re completely horizontal on top of the bike but I don’t want one of those Harley looking bikes either. I was told a Ninja 250 or 500 but a small part of me doesn’t want to get one because they look horrible, as well as want to explore any other options. Ultimately the key selling point for me is mpg and growing room.

Any suggestions? I’m looking for used and possibly one from craig’s list. Is there anything I need to watch out for when getting a used one? I’m trying to get all my bases covered before I actually spend my money on one of these things.

A Honda Nighthawk 250, last year 2008. A Suzuki TU250, new for 2009. Either should get about 60 mpg. Both “normal” looking motorcycles; neither feet foreward cruiser nor butt skyward sport bike. That TU looks very interesting, but so far not available in California.

If you are honest about saving and stay off the highway, a Kawasaki 125 Eliminator. That last is a bit small, but not uncomfortably so; should get about 80 mpg.

Fixed costs: The motorcycle, tax, registration, helmet, jacket, boots, gloves. Going with a used 125, if you find a clean running one at $1,500 grab it! You will sell it for $1,000 in three years. Government gets about $200, gear will be about $300. Insurance, don’t know, maybe $200 a year?. Fixed costs $400 a year for three years — bare minimum!

Figuring on $3 a gallon average cost, 1000 miles costs $125 at 24 mpg, $37.50 at 80 mpg. Tires cost $500 / 50,000 miles in a car, $200 / 10,000 miles on a bike; 1000 miles worth of tire is $10 car, $20 bike. Savings of bike in lieu of car: $77.50 per 1000 miles. Your Break-even point is a little over 5,000 miles per year on the bike in lieu of the car. Anything less and the bike is a money loser — the gas saving will not pay for it. And that is a POS Eliminator!

A 250 will cost more to purchase, say another $200 a year? At 60 mpg you save $65/1000 miles, paying off the $600 fixed costs the breakeven point is over 9,000 miles. Just summer/no rain riding? That’s a whole lot of miles to do on just nice sunny days.

Getting a motorcycle in addition to a car will not save you money. The savings in gas will not pay for the bike. If you keep the car, get the bike for FUN.

Getting a motorcycle and selling the car WILL save you money, big money. You will ride in rain and cold, which some of us think is fun also.
