What should I look for when buying a used bike?
My price limit is only $ 3000. I see lots of old motorcycles for sale, as Yamaha and Honda in the 1980's. The bikes say they have low miles and run perfect, but are not familiar with bike maintenance, or have a garage to work, avoiding the motorcycles. For example, a 1200 cc 1983 Yamaha Royale risk says new carb runs great and only has 17K on it. He wants $ 2800 for it. What do you think of that? There is also a 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 cc of $ 3200. It has 37K on it. 37K is a lot for a motorcycle? I'm good at buying cars used, but no idea of buying a bicycle. I'm looking for a bike to work, and explore the streets of the city. I always choose Best Answer. Thanks for your time.
I love old bikes, but a bike that has sat almost always require work. Clean the fuel tank, lines and carb, replacing parts Rubber many that become brittle with age. Some parts are difficult or impossible to find. If you are not mechanically inclined, Id go for the new one. 37k is not much for a bike, and 3200 is a good price for the bike in my area. Look for the color of smoke when the bike is started cold. None is better, white is acceptable for 2-3 minutes. Look below for any evidence of leaking oil, how many owners of the bike has had scrapes or scratches on foreign areas indicating the bike was destroyed and that isn't someone. To see if the packaging is intact throughout the case has not yet been set aside for internal repair. private vendors are often reluctant to allow test drives, but listening to the engine (smooth?) starting (smooth?) brakes (scream?) change (easily?) can be seen by looking at the ride vendor. Some vendors allow test runs with the understanding – the ruin, you bought it. Some dealers allow test rides on their bikes, some traders bikes are more used than others. At least you can go sit in a pile to see what's left.
