Park Bike Chain Cleaner

How do you properly de-grease/oil your chain?
I find I am having problems with this. First I spray the chain and gears with a bunch of WD-40 (back pedaling the gears to get spread it around real good) to try to thouroughly degrease the chain/gears and let it sit for about an hour to drain. Then I wipe them down with paper towels. Then I do the same with 3-in-1 oil to oil the gears/chain, soaking it with oil, letting it drain off and then wiping it down with paper towels to remove as much excess oil off as possible and then take it for a quick drive to make sure all gears get hit with the oil.
The problem is that once I park my bike until the next day it drains off the bike and I get a major puddle of excess oil and grease gunk that the WD-40 didn’t orignally get off onto my tiled floor.
What can I do to clean the gunk off better and more thoroughly?
Is there anything that can I do to prevent the after-puddle or is this normal?
Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.
