Is a 2006 Trek Equinox 5 a good bike to get for a beginner?

I am looking into buying a used road bike. I am new to the sport, having ridden a couple hundred miles on an older road bike a couple years ago. I’m now looking to pick it up seriously, with intentions on eventually doing triathlons. I have found a 2006 Trek Equinox 5 that looks to be in great shape and is my size and fit for $630. I am wondering if that is a good price and if that is a good bike to get. I have checked it out on the trek website and bikepedia and it appears to come with some decent parts. I’m wondering also if I’ll be able to use a triathlon bike as a regular road bike easily. I know for triathlons I’ll have to adjust the seat and perhaps the handle bars, so I’m really wondering what people think about this bike and if it’s a good deal, because I can’t find many reviews about them on the internet as I can with other bikes. Thanks.

I dunno man, if you’re going to be biking long distances or a lot you’re not going to want to do it on a tri bike. The price looks good but tri bikes are designed to go fast on fairly straight roads and over shorter distances for the most part. They are not comfortable to ride because they are built for speed. They are also harder to ride and balance than a regular road bike due to geometry often built specifically for a smooth transition from the bike portion to the run in the tri. If you get the chance to test ride it give it a shot, it might not bother you that much and would end up being a pretty good deal, but for the most part triathletes do not do most of their training on a tri bike. They use the tri bike for racing and a road bike to train on.
