What apparel do women wear for Triathlons?

I’ve never done a triathlon but I’ve always been interested in doing one. I am looking into the Santa Cruz sprint tri on September 27th because it has shorter distances: 400m swim, 11 mile bike, 2.5 mile run.

I really don’t want to spend a fortune on clothing for the race, but I realize that you do get what you pay for. I know the waters will be pretty cold around 62 degrees so Im not sure if I should get a wetsuit. I’d probably prefer a top and bike shorts to be more comfortable throughout the entire race and prevent chaffing.

So with that in mind please let me know what you recommend for a first-timer. Also, I’d prefer to purchase from a local sporting goods store since you can’t try on things online.

Women wear special wetsuits over 1 piece swimsuits for swimming. The rear zipper is attached to a long string which they can quickly unzip before the bicycle stage.

During the bicycle stage, they take off the wet suit and already have their 1 piece swimsuit/cycling suit (which is worn under their wetsuit during the swim stage) and they put on their clip-toed cycling shoes.

After done with the cycling stage, they switch shoes to running shoes and continue wearing their cycling/swim 1 piece bathing suit.
